Ok, noob question time.

I've never done my own A/C before, and I noticed as it gets hotter outside, my A/C just isn't cutting it. I bought a recharge kit, hooked up the gauge and when the compressor's running it reads 33 PSI, which according to the ambient temp gauge I had, said it should be closer to 40, so I started charging. Every so often, my compressor would click off (I realized I didn't have it on HI afterwards) and I would stop filling. When the compressor was off it would read 48, on it was 34, so I kept filling. When it got close to 35 the compressor clicked off, and when it tried to kick back on, the motor tried to stall and it would make an odd noise, then it would stop trying to get the A/C to turn back on. When I took a ride around the block it was fine, and hasn't done it since, yet I want to know, did I do something wrong? Does it need to be filled more? Did I overfill it?

It's considerably colder then I was before, CONSIDERABLY. But I still wonder, if it's 85 outside and the gauge reads 34-35 psi, then is it still 10psi underfilled? If my compressor considering quitting on me?

Also, the car used to idle rough when the a/c was on, like it was struggling to operate. After getting some refridgerant in there, it's much smoother.

I'm confused about the whole thing. lol Help?

So, just to clarify, when it clicks and the fan turns on, the compressor's running, and when it clicks and the fans turn off, the compressor's not running, correct? When it clicks off and the fans shut off, the PSI jumps up, so I figure that means the compressor's off. And when it clicks and the fans turn back on, the compressor's on and that's the PSI I should be looking at, correct?

I tend to not ask questions on the big board, usually a feeding frenzy. lol It's not that big of a deal, I feel a pretty decent increase in A/C performance since I charged it, I think I'll try to add more again. Anyone know how to vent it if I overcharge?

It illegal but to the atmoshere. lol You know you over charged it cause the compressor won't click due to to much pressure. At least that's what the camaros and mustangs do. You need a fan switch. Night and day difference on briars car.

Yes I would like to know. And yeah, the compressor wouldn't click on, but when I took the car for a drive, I just made sure the RPMs were up when it tried to click and it turned on just fine, and I haven't had a problem since. I thought maybe it was a fluke, or maybe I accidentally kept charging it while the compressor was off, creating uneven pressure. *shrug*

And illegal... psh, who does anything illegal here. Sheesh... illegal...

It's working fine, to my knowledge, just isn't as cold as I would like it. Anothing thing that strikes me as odd is that when I'm at idle, and the fan's on say 2 and it's completely cold, the compressor cycles about every 10 seconds. If I'm driving, it doesn't click off, but if I'm idling it repeats that cycle...
